Tioman Island, What all Tioman Visitors Need to Know


6 Villages: Salang, Air Batang, Tekek, Paya, Genting and Juara. There are a few smaller settlements, but these are the 6 main villages.
Mosques: There sare several mosques in Tioman. You can alwaysask if you're not sure.
Currency: MYR/RM (Ringgit Malaysia).
Bank: There are no banks as such, but Tekek Village has an ATM. Bringing some cash to Tioman is advised, however.
Power: Voltage ranges from 220 - 240 volts AC at 50Hz.
Telephone: CDMA and fixed. Some areas aren't covered by the network.
Population:   Friendly, laid-back and approachable.
Language: Malay. However, English is not a problem.
Mass: Metric i.e. kilograms, grams etc.
Distance: Metric i.e. kilometers, meters etc. However, Imperial units are also understood.
"Makan": Typically food is spicy. However, you can ask for less chili, or "kurang pedas".
Tipping: There's no tipping culture, like in the west. However, tips are accepted and appreciated.
Medicine: Bring your own remedies, such as panadol, immodium etc. However, a clinic is available.
Timezone: Depending on European Summer Time, 7/8 hours ahead of GMT.
Internet: Typically, the more exclusive the hotel or resort, the faster the internet speeds. Budget rooms usually offer fairly laggy Wi-Fi.
Transport: Roads only in Tekek and Juara. Mopeds and bicycles are available for rent. Water-taxis for hopping to neighboring kampungs.
Activities: Sea-based, like SUP, snorkeling and scubadiving. However, there are some fun land-based adventures to be had as well.
Arriving: Usually by ferry. There is a flight to Tioman as well. (Note: The service is currently suspended).
