Tioman and malaria

Home / Tickets / Update* / Blog

Whilst Tioman does have its fair share of mosquitoes, it is a tropical island after all, Tioman's mozzies are not known as a particularly aggressive kind and certainly don't carry malaria or dengue.

In fact, while still listed as a malaria-infected country, most medical literature states that malaria has been widely eradicated from virtually all parts of Malaysia, including from Tioman, the last outbreak of malaria here dating back to 1926.

So malaria tablets aren't generally prescribed for Tioman, which is part of the reason why it's been enjoying unrivaled popularity amongst young families with little kids: it's totally free of any insect-borne diseases.

That said, if you're not sure, then by all means consult your family doctor.

Tip: To prevent mosquito bites altogether, turn up the air-con in your room by a notch. Mosquitoes don't like flying in turbulent air currents, particularly when the air is chilled. You can also ask the resort manager for a mosquito net, locally known as a "klamboe".

This is a great way to present a physical barrier between you and any mosquitoes that did make it into your room. Or, alternatively, apply some insect repellent, such as "Off", available at most shops in Tioman, or any natural insect repellent, such as a citronella-based ointment.

Warning: If you've recently taken Lariam (Mefloquine) because you were elsewhere in Malaysia, then please make sure you don't suffer any of the common side-effects, including nausea and vertigo, before you head out for a scuba-dive.
