Tioman Island Clean-up Day 2024

Home / Tickets / Update* / Blog

Tioman Island Clean-up Day is the initiative of Berjaya Hotels & Resorts. From its humble beginnings in 2011, basically an informal get-together among the diving community interested in cleaning up the reefs and surrounding area, Tioman Island Clean-up Day has now evolved into a full-on Corporate Social Responsibility programme. Tioman Island Clean-up Day enjoys the support from PADI, Project AWARE and a lot of participating Tioman dive centres.

Tioman Island Clean-up Day usually involves over 100 volunteers, including Berjaya staff, kids from Tioman's school, media participants and even tv celebrities, all of whom put in plenty of sweaty back-breaking time on the ground in a mass clean-up effort of Tioman's beaches.

And because Tioman's offshore ecosystems, its unique coral gardens, are susceptible to the accumulation of debris as well, 50-60 scuba-divers are further employed to fan out over the coral gardens, with the aim to collect rubbish, to be taken to land for incineration.

But it's not just man-made rubbish that is collected during Tioman Island Clean-up Day. To reduce the relentless crown-of-thorns starfish pressure on our coral gardens, as many of this voracious starfish predator as possible are caught by the participating divers and then disposed of also.

It is hoped that Tioman Island Clean-up Day will serve to strengthen our resolve to maintain our efforts to keep Tioman's ecosystems flourishing, both above and below the waterline, whilst simultaneously fulfilling our educational objectives by spreading the word on the importance of conservation, now, in the face of global warming, more than ever.
