Double Tree Hotel in Johor Bahru is a newly constructed hotel, at the time of writing about 6 months old, and it shows. The building, the design, the interior, everything has a fresh and spanking new air about it. They also couldn't have put it in a better spot; there's a number of shopping malls dotted around Double Tree Hotel in Johor Bahru, all within walking distance.
Checking into our rooms was quite painless. The reception staff were all competent, efficient and, best of all, fully fluent in English. In fact, communication was effortless with all hotel staff - not always the case in this part of the world, but greatly appreciated when it is.
It was a bit of a shame that we couldn't have two adjacent rooms, which we had requested beforehand, but I suppose the Double Tree must have been rather full, given the imminent Christmas period.
Besides, the complimentary chocolate chip cookies we received upon check-in more than made up for our rooms being apart. These cookies are freshly-baked, still warm and seriously delicious. (Note to self: Ask Double Tree Hotel for their cookie recipe).
The rooms we did get, both doubles, whilst tidy and clean, weren't big. At our room rate, SGD$ 250 each per night, you do expect somewhat more space. That said, perhaps the rates had been adjusted upwards, due to the peak season () being just around the corner. Meanwhile, the Double Tree Hotel bathroom is well-fitted and attractively decorated. The Crabtree & Evelyn toiletries are a nice added touch.
What was disappointing, especially in this day and age, with Wi-Fi so ubiquitous and so basic a necessity, is the way that Double Tree charges extra for Wi-Fi in your room. Really now, what are they thinking? At a total bill of SGD$ 1000 for 2 nights, they can't throw in free room Wi-Fi? Frankly, this review's favorable paragraphs above notwithstanding, charging guests extra for room Wi-Fi is nothing short of offensive.
And it's quite a dated approach really, given that most hotels now offer free Wi-Fi outright. We found this practice of charging extra for room Wi-Fi unbecoming of a hotel of the stature of Double Tree, which is part of Hilton, after all and it left a nasty taste in our mouth. What's next, Double Tree, a coin-operated TV set? Then again, perhaps by this time, they've realized the errors of their ways and made Wi_fi in de room free of charge, like as good as all other hotels and resorts these days.
We're ending this review on a positive note however, because Double Tree's buffet spread was excellent; quite lavish and quite delicious. The restaurant service was consistently above par too.
Conclusion
Double Tree Hotel Johor Bahru isn't exactly a budget choice, but you certainly get what you pay for. Hopefully, Double Tree Hotel management soon changes its anachronistic stance on the extra charges for room Wi-Fi.
Tip: Look for rooms that are less costly, because these are also on offer at Double Tree Hotel Johor Bahru, i.e. from SGD$ 100 upwards. On Agoda, you can set your preferred budget before doing a room availability search. This way you always pay the lowest rate for the room that you're booking.
