Malaysia Day, which in Malay is called Hari Malaysia, is celebrated on 16 September. This year, 2025, Malaysia Day falls on a Tuesday.
Malaysia Day commemorates 16 September 1963, the day newly-independent Singapore and the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, joined the Federation of Malaya to create the Malaysian Federation.
Incidentally, Singapore would separate from the federation two years later.
Interestingly, Malaysia Day was initially scheduled for 1 June 1963, but it was delayed twice. The first time the inaugural Malaysia Day was delayed was on 31 August 1963, which was the current Malaysia Day at the time. Malaysia Day was then delayed again, in order to organize referendums to take place. As a result of this, effectively, Malaysia now has two Malaysia Day celebrations.
The Malaysia Day on September 16th has been an official national holiday since 2010. Whilst announcing this holiday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib stated that Malaysia Day would henceforth involve activities that would foster the Malaysia spirit and that Malaysia Day would also be celebrated with formal events, such as a parade in order to commemorate the significance of this historical day.

NOTE: Since 2010, the number of hotel rooms in Tioman has outgrown the number of ferry tickets to Tioman that are available. This is the result of Tioman's ever-growing popularity as a weekend getaway outpacing the ferry's ability to cope with Mersing's waterways low water levels. Bottom line, as the ferry can only depart during high tide, the number of ferry crossings to Tioman is, at times, limited to as few as one crossing per day!
With this in mind, we urge Tioman travelers to book the ferry with plenty of advance, especially during public and school holidays, as well as weekends. This way, the situation of having a hotel booking but no ferry booking to get to that hotel may be avoided.Book your ferry tickets now.
