Pulau Tinggi

Home / Tickets / Update* / Blog

Pro Tip: Larkin Bus Terminal
Whilst Pulau Tinggi has the highest number of local kampung residents of all Johor's east coast treasure islands, Tinggi remains one of the area's most idyllic and tranquil island to visit for tourists from Malaysia, Singapore and further afield.

The main reason for this, apart from Pulau Tenggi's breathtaking scenery, sugar-white beaches and sapphire-hued sea, is that Pulau Tinggi's kampung-dwellers are distributed sparsely across the island.

Pulau Tinggi is Malay for "Tall Island" and Tinggi has been named such, due to the fact that it sports a 600 meter tall hill, one of the Seri Buat Archipelago islands' tallest points. Only Tioman's Gunung Kajang, which stands at 1000+ meters tall, is higher.

The other commonly used name for Pulau Tinggi is "General's Hat", a moniker the island was bestowed by the ancient merchants that used to stop at Pulau Tinggi during their trade journeys.

Whichever of the names is used, clearly Pulau Tinggi is stunning, the ideal location to re-charge the soul and to get away from the urban rat-race, if only for a couple of blissful days. And nights.

If it's fun and activities you're after, then snorkeling and scuba diving are highly recommended. Pulau Tinggi an official marine park and, as such, is afforded full protected status, resuilting in the island's already thriving wildlife, both marine and terrestrial, now being even more deserving of a closer look.

Regardless of whether you're an eco-warrior or a weekend warrior, Pulau Tinggi will have you utterly amazed, both above and below the waterline.

Other fun things to do on Pulau Tinggi are: island hopping (Tip: Pulau Harimau), jungle-trekking, canoeing, or visiting the turtle sanctuary.

There are currently two accommodations on offer in Pulau Tinggi. These are, in no particular order: Tad Marine Resort and Shaz Resort.

TIP: Keep in mind that November to February is monsoon season, a spell typified by high winds and waves. Best time to go to Pulau Tinggi is from March to October. The weather will be mostly fair and sunny and the sea will be clear and calm. That said, even the non-monsoon months see the occasional shower, which, typically however, clear within an hour or so, leaving the island fresh and fruity.

How to get to Pulau Tinggi

Pulau Tinggi is located about 30 kilometers off Mersing, perhaps a 45 minute speedboat ride. Alternatively, you can make your way to the Johor seaside town of Tanjung Leman first and take a speedboat from there to Pulau Tinggi.

In both cases, a taxi is arguably the most convenient option, but there are buses that go to Mersing as well, albeit not to Tanjung Leman, for the moment. However, do give Tanjung Leman a try in the below form's dropdown, as infrastructure is always getting better in this neck of the woods.

Given that most of the available bus companies journey to Mersing only once each day, we recommend booking your bus tickets before it's fully booked.
